February 2017 – Ms. Coffey is a member of the North Carolina State Committee of the America College of Trial Lawyers, serving as Diversity Liaison for North Carolina to the national office.
October 2016 – Ms. Coffey and Ms. Horton successfully defended a community hospital in the Novant Health system in an 8 week trial where a patient claimed she developed complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) as a result of positioning during a surgical procedure. The defense relied heavily on local CRPS expert Richard Rauck, MD of Carolinas Pain Institute to establish and defend the established diagnostic criteria.
April 2016 – Ms. Coffey and Ms. Biggerstaff successfully defended the bone marrow transplant and interventional radiology teams of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in a complex medical negligence trial. The defense centered on the valiant life-saving care and treatment of the national ranked and recognized bone marrow transplant team.
January 2016 – Ms. Coffey obtained a defense verdict for a nationally and regionally recognized bariatric surgeon in a wrongful death action. The case involved complex issues of delayed onset of sepsis following bariatric surgery, and the defense centered on outstanding surgical and post-op care and the lack of any causal connection between the management of the patient’s care and her death.
